Context

The continuity of family wealth also depends on the preparation of those who will be responsible for it. For NextGen members, this preparation is both personal and financial: understanding their family’s history and values, finding their place, and acquiring the necessary guidance to participate in decision-making with discernment.
The ISFB NextGen Academy works with families, family offices, and EAMs to design customized programs based on the modules of the ISFB Family Officer Certificate. Each program links the human aspects of wealth transfer to governance and investment issues. Its content and structure are tailored to the family’s specific context, the participants’ existing knowledge, and the responsibilities for which they are preparing.

Key objectives

· Clarify one’s role within the family and prepare for responsibilities as a family member, owner, or investor.
· Understand the key components of family wealth and assess the risks, liquidity, and investment horizons.
· Understand the governance rules, roles, and decision-making processes that support family continuity.
· Develop sound judgment, ask advisors the right questions, and align wealth management decisions with the family’s values and goals.
· Build confidence in intergenerational dialogue and develop a network of qualified professionals and trusted partners.

Target audience

The program is designed for the next generation of families, primarily young adults aged 18 to 30. The age range and educational approach can be tailored to the needs of each family.
It is designed at the request of families with significant wealth, single or multi-family offices, or EAMs (External Asset Managers, independent wealth managers) seeking to support the preparation of their clients’ next generations.
A program may bring together members of a single family or a group organized by a family office or an EAM, including multiple families with their consent.

Stakeholders

ISFB lecturers have many years of experience in the banking and financial sectors or in their respective fields. They are recognized as among the leading experts in Switzerland.

Risk & Legal

Content: Understanding and applying Swiss regulations is essential to ensure legal compliance and effective risk management within a family office. This module offers an in-depth exploration of the main laws in force, including the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA), the Financial Services Act (FINA), the Financial Institutions Act (FINA) and the Data Protection Act (DPA).
A holistic approach to the regulatory framework enables us to analyze the interactions between these different laws, and to understand the relationships with the relevant Swiss authorities, such as FINMA (Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority), FTA (Federal Tax Administration), Supervisory Bodies (SB) and Self-Regulatory Bodies (SRO). This analysis is particularly relevant for family offices, which, depending on their structure (single or multi-family office), may be subject to licensing and supervisory obligations.
Governance and risk management play a central role in this context. This involves identifying the legal, operational and reputational risks associated with family office activities, and implementing best practices in terms of compliance. This includes documenting financial services, assessing the risks associated with financial instruments, verifying the appropriateness and adequacy of advice, and ensuring transparency with regard to conflicts of interest and remuneration received.
The aim of this module is to provide professionals with a clear and operational understanding of the Swiss regulatory framework, while equipping them for responsible governance in line with current standards.

On the other hand, it addresses the growing digital risks and cybersecurity measures essential to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with regulations, notably the HPA.

Participants will learn how to design effective reporting systems while implementing robust IT security practices, guaranteeing the reliability, confidentiality and resilience of family office operations.
Format: In-person
Possible speakers: Ludovic REGARD, Frédéric DOMMART, Tamara JAKUBIAK

Philanthropy

Contents: Philanthropy is an increasingly important topic for families today. It represents an essential dimension of their intangible heritage and embodies their raison d'être in today's world. The aim of this module is to help participants gain a better understanding of the issues involved in philanthropic involvement by families, whether they have invested assets or own a family group. It offers concrete examples, practical approaches, as well as useful tools and resources.

For a family officer, several dimensions will be explored. The module begins with an overview of current trends in philanthropy, from traditional giving to impact finance and social entrepreneurship. It then presents eight strategic issues that will enable you to adopt a professional and proactive approach, notably through the Family Philanthropy Navigator developed by IMD and WISE. Particular attention is paid to the specific characteristics of each generation, in families where two, three or even four generations may be involved simultaneously.

Case studies will illustrate the different ways in which families are involved in philanthropy today. Finally, part of the module will be devoted to family foundations, with a presentation of best practices to ensure their effective and sustainable management.
Format: In-person
Possible speakers: EICHENBERGER Etienne
FO14

Supervision & Monitoring

Content: This module explores the oversight and monitoring mechanisms essential to the sound governance of a Family Office. It aims to provide participants with the skills needed to establish a control framework tailored to Swiss regulatory requirements, while ensuring the transparency, traceability, and security of operations.
Structured around the three-pronged approach of Delegate – Control – Reassure, it addresses the central question of a Family Officer’s responsibility: why supervise when delegating, and what are the consequences if supervision is lacking? The course distinguishes between two areas with very different constraints: the monitoring of liquid portfolios (performance and risk, oversight of portfolio managers, SAA drift management, and multi-custodian consolidation) and that of illiquid assets (private equity, real estate, and art). Particular attention is paid to the Family Officer’s ability to detect weak signals and bring them to light.
The practical component is based on a fictional case study that serves as a common thread throughout three progressive workshops: building a monitoring dashboard tailored to a complex family profile, identifying critical alerts hidden within a real quarterly report, and evaluating proposed tools in light of the Family Officer’s specific needs.

Particular attention is paid to client relations, based on independence, trust, and absolute confidentiality. Practical cases and real-life studies illustrate the structuring of wealth after the sale of a business, the management of complex assets, or the reallocation of concentrated wealth, in order to provide a concrete understanding of the Private Office's role as a conductor.
