Money, poison or treasure?

May 28, 2025

The book L'argent, poison ou trésor? Pour un usage apaisé de son argent, co-written by Nicole Prieur, Philippe Depoorter and Étienne Eichenberger, explores the complexity of our relationship with money. The authors analyze how money, although central to our lives, remains a taboo subject, charged with contradictory emotions such as freedom, guilt or constraint. They point out that money has a profound influence on our interpersonal relationships, particularly within families, couples and siblings, where it can become a source of tension and conflict.

By combining their respective expertise in philosophy, family governance and philanthropy, the authors suggest ways of understanding and calming our relationship with money. They call for taboos to be lifted, and for money to be approached not just as an economic tool, but also as a vector of meaning and social ties. The book encourages us to reflect on how money can be used to serve people, contributing to personal and collective well-being, rather than to the accumulation of wealth.
